Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share one in the comments. It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad!
This week I’ve chosen the word balance.
It has been a full on seven days! After a month or so of being very quiet work wise, the combination of starting two new blogs and work getting busier again has certainly been a challenge. I’ve really had to start figuring out how I’m going to find my balance between the two as well as ticking off everything else on my to do list each week.
I freelance as an architectural assistant and for some reason June was unbelievably slow. I imagine it mostly comes down to the fact that it is summer. Everyone is looking to spend money on activities and holidays over extending their homes at this time of year.
In order to combat my work issue I spent some time reaching out to potential new clients. Sometimes this works really well and I receive a lot of positive replies, sometimes I hear nothing. This time, it went well. Yes there is a chance I may have done a happy dance as emails came through.
I have heard back from around three or four different architects who are keen to begin working with me. This is fantastic news of course, but the anxious me always gets a bit overwhelmed for a short time. You always want to make a good impression and do a really good job to prove your worth on the first project. I’ll settle into it, I always do.
Whilst having a lack of work has been tough on my finances it has allowed me some down time to focus on setting up Sunshine and Rain and My Debt Diary. The free time has gone to good use, figuring out things like how to host a blog properly, how to set up plug ins, what is required in terms of GDPR (still figuring this one out, aren’t we all?) and the general ins and outs of what it takes to make a blog function.
I have learnt most of what I know from Emma Drew, so if setting up a blog is something you have considered doing I highly recommend visiting her website! I’m not affiliated with her courses or anything, I just think she’s great!
There’s a funny thing about owning a home…you have to clean it. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, you have to keep that in good nick too. The busier I get the more I realise that being an adult is hard work and I’d rather just have my mum come stay to help me with everything…my fiance would love that I’m sure!
To help calm my brain down I’ve made an attempt to be more organised and stay on top of to-do lists and deadlines. I love a good list, so I find this bit fun!
Work takes priority. I will keep track of current and incoming projects and make sure I know all of my deadlines. I’ll focus on these between 9 and 5, roughly, to make sure everything is done as and when it should be.
The calendar feature on WordPress is well and truly in action and any time I find myself thinking about the blog I jump on quickly to throw down my thoughts into a draft post. I often find myself thinking about things when I’m about to fall asleep or when I’m in the bath. A lot of notes get thrown into emails to myself first to ensure I don’t forget them!
My cleaning routine had become a bit of a habit of finding a quiet day in the week and doing it all at once. That might not be so possible now. Instead, I’m going to designate one task to each day. That way it can slot in between other things and I can feel like I’m on top of things even on really busy days.
This should give me balance in my day and balance in my head too!
So there it is, my word of the week and a summary of the past seven days.
