Word of the Week – Cake

Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share one in the comments. It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad!

This week I have chosen the word cake

I’ve been thinking a lot about cake…and not just in the “oh I really fancy eating a lot of cake right now” sort of way I usually do.

A couple of weeks I go I told you that I was in the process of booking the last couple of things for my wedding next year. Well, my fiance and I have been looking at our options for our wedding cake. It’s no secret that they can be expensive. As I spoke about in my Five Frugal Things post over on my other blog, we’re looking to find an affordable alternative.

We had our first go at making a Madeira cake at home and it tasted amazing. The only small issue, it took almost four hours to bake! Back to the drawing board as that just seems like a bit too much work. Especially the day before the wedding. We’re thinking of trying a simple vanilla sponge next time. If you have any thoughts or advice, please do share!

Of course, if you are interested in baking you’ll know my other reason for choosing cake as my word of the week. The Great British Bake Off is back! I’m so excited, not only because I love the show but because it signifies the beginning of autumn and winter for me and that makes me really happy.

Unfortunately, I’m only an OK baker. I’m the typical impatient person that would probably make many a good cake if only I could wait long enough before I open the door. I’m going to take some inspiration from the bake off and try one or two simple things to try and build my confidence up. Then I’ll eat far too much cake at once, accompanied by a big cup of tea!

So there it is, my word of the week and a summary of the past seven days.

You can read last week’s post here.

  1. Good luck with deciding on the cake for the wedding and finding something that is simple to bake and delicious. I always find using an oven timer helps reduce the temptation to open the oven door too much too soon (plus makes it less likely that I’ll forget how long it’s been in which is my other usual problem!) On the plus side sampling different cakes to find out what you want will be fun. Have to confess I’ve never seen GBBO but I have the same feeling abou Strictly when it comes to marking the start of the autumn/winter and the countdown to Christmas. #WotW

    1. Haha I like your thinking Louise…we should probably try chocolare, carrot and fruit cake too right, just to be sure? I’m the worst when it comes to oven timers, I’m so impatient. There’s a reason that my better half does all the cooking in our house. I’m lucky to have him! #WotW

  2. Well done on trying to save some pennies by baking your own wedding cake. Marks & Spencer used to do different sized iced celebration cakes in plain white, I bought 2 for my wedding then a family member added decorations it was simple but lovely. I love watching bake off but I’m definitely more of a cake appreciator than a baker ! #wotw

    1. I love that title Angela, cake appreciator. I can definitely relate πŸ˜› I had looked at the M&S cakes but got mixed reviews from anyone I asked, I’m glad to know they worked for you so they could be a good option! #WotW

    1. Thank you so much Jocelyn, I hope we can decide on something soon! In the meantime, I’ll just have to eat all of the leftovers πŸ˜‰ #WotW

  3. Wow… I can’t believe you are baking your own wedding cake. I wouldn’t dare. It definitely wouldn’t look like something off Bake off. We are cake and the GBBO lovers in our house too. The husband does make a great Lemon Curd cake and I am chief taster. #WotW

    1. It’s very much a theory at this stage Louise…we’ll see how further practice runs go first! I will also take the role of chief taster, it’s all I’m qualified for…otherwise I have to stay clear of the kitchen. #WotW

  4. You had me at cake haha! I love GBBO and I cant wait to see who is my fave baker is going to be. Have fun with choosing the cake for you wedding. I love the one from the royal wedding (Harry & Meghan) as it looks simple and yet pretty and I am sure delish! #wotw

    1. haha, Merlinda if only I had a royal wedding budget! I will have a nosey to see what they went for though as I don’t remember seeing it at the time πŸ™‚ #WotW

  5. What a great word! I do like cake. hehehe Good luck with finding the perfect one for your wedding.
Ahh! I do love The Great British Bake Off. It is starting to feel a lot like Autumn with that back & X Factor starting. #WotW

    1. I’m so excited Kim! Autumn is definitely my favourite season with all the excitement of Christmas building! Thanks for dropping by πŸ™‚ #WotW

  6. I have made wedding cakes in the past, but when I got married i needed a hassle free cake on a tight budget. I ordered 3 iced cakes from Marks and Spencers (very reasonably priced) and picked them up the day before the wedding. I added some pillars, flowers and a topper and hey presto, a lovely (and tasty) cake for half the price and less than half the effort!
But I have to say, Cake is an excellent word of the week πŸ™‚

    1. It looks like the M&S cake is a popular choice Anne! Thankfully we have a lot of time to prepare and that is always a good option to go for πŸ™‚ #WotW
