Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share one in the comments. It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad!
This week I have chosen the word Office
My choice of word this week is a little bit of a boring one, but it actually has a really positive meaning behind it.
If you’ve been following my blog for a little while you’ll know that I work from home. I’m very lucky to have the space in my house to use one of the rooms as an office space for my business. Despite this I got myself into the habit of working from the sofa every single day.
Don’t get me wrong, I looooove working from the comfort of the sofa and always hit all my deadlines without any issues. A few negative associations were starting to pop up for me though. Most significantly I started to find the day and evening just blending into one. I was surrounded by my laptop and books constantly. I’m very lucky to love what I do, but I was working far longer than I should have been as a result.
Now that I have two separate spaces, one for work and work for relaxing, I can feel a difference between parts of the day. I now come downstairs to a spotless living room every evening ready to enjoy dinner and chill with my better half knowing that work is all organised and ready to go the next morning.
I’ve also found myself taking my work more seriously. I have always behaved professionally when it comes to freelancing of course, but I’ve always thought of my Etsy shop as “something small on the side”. It deserves more than that. It is a proper job and I’m already seeing improvements now that I am treating as such.
Moving from the sofa to my office has been a simple change, but it has had such a positive impact on my focus and my attitude to my work already. I’m so glad I made the change!
