Plan Your Days

This is one of the most important tips for working at home because it’s so easy to get distracted. If you don’t plan your day, you may end up taking a longer lunch and watching TV or distracting yourself with other things around the house. People tend to convince themselves that they’ll just work a bit later into the evening or catch up tomorrow, but it never happens. However, if you break your day into small chunks and dedicate each time block to a certain task, you will find it a lot easier to stay on track. If you split your day up and switch between tasks fairly often, it is easier to maintain your focus and you will get more done.

Create A Dedicated Workspace

The best way to avoid distractions is to create a dedicated workspace. Getting into a working mindset can be tough when you are at home, and it’s a lot harder if you are sitting on the sofa in front of the TV. However, if you create a dedicated home office, you will find it much easier to stay focused and you can separate your work life from your home life, even though they’re in the same place. You don’t necessarily need a whole room to turn into an office if you don’t have space, you can set up a small desk in the corner of a room or even sit at the kitchen table.

Dress Comfortably

Often, people say that you should dress like you are in the office when working at home to get you into the right mindset, but that’s not always the best option. It’s important that you don’t sit around in your pajamas all day, but you should also try to dress comfortably because people tend to be more productive when they are comfortable. Office wear isn’t always the comfiest thing, especially when the weather is hot, so why not go for a pair of jeans instead? When you dress in comfortable clothes, you will find it a lot easier to concentrate.

Get Out Of The House

When you are stuck in the house all day long, you will soon start to get a bit of cabin fever, and that makes it tough to work effectively. If you are going to be productive, it’s important that you get out of the house from time to time. Even if you just take a ten minute walk after your lunch, you will return to the house feeling refreshed and ready to work. You could also consider heading to a library or a coffee shop to work on some days, so you can break up the week a bit. A change of scenery is a very simple but effective way to boost your motivation and stay productive.

Understand The Differences

Many people struggle with working at home because they treat it the same as working in an office. They try to create the same routine and working practices that they would in a traditional office setting, but that is never going to work because remote working is completely different.

It’s important that you understand the good and the bad things about working from home, so you can adapt your work day accordingly. For example, if you have family at home while you are trying to work, you have to accept that there will be distractions sometimes and it may be better to work in short bursts or get out of the house at certain times of day when it’s tough to concentrate.

You may also need to share spaces with other people in the family, so you will need to build your work day around other people’s schedules as well. If you don’t recognize the differences and you treat your work day like you would at the office, you will find it hard to stay productive.

Working from home for the first time can be tough, but if you follow these tips, you will be able to stay productive.
